Presentations
 -  Posted by Deepa on Sep 28 2004 [General]

It is difficult to visualize how meetings got conducted before the age of PowerPoint. Whether we love it or hate it, we can?t seem to do without it.

Here are a couple of resources from people who can help you maximise the potential of the medium and could almost make you enjoy it, if not love it.

Cliff Atkinson writes an extremely readable blog, Beyond Bullets and you definitely come away with ideas that you can try out at your next presentation. It is on hiatus till November but certainly worth catching up on the archives in the meantime.

Geetesh Bajaj, another PowerPoint proponent has a blog and a number of resources and tips on the effective use of PowerPoint.

Happy experimenting!

Whose company would people prefer to be in? Dr. Bennis shared this snippet on how leaders should bring out the best in people.
  • ?Be yourself and use every opportunity that comes to you. Be proud of whatever you are and whoever you are.? Dr. Kiran Bedi
  • ?Nobody can prevent you from choosing to be exceptional.? Dr. Kiran Bedi on what she learnt from her parents.
  • ?We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is a habit.? Socrates. Dr. Kiran Bedi on a principle she lives by.

  • ?We are not in the coffee business serving people; we are in the people business serving coffee.? Dr. Warren Bennis quoting Howard Schultz to make the point that it is important for leaders to keep reminding people on ?what is important, what are we doing and why are we there??
  • ?You can?t stand for something if you put your name for everything.? Al Ries on branding.
  • ?Select one thing that you are good at and be known for that.? Al Ries

    Notes of wisdom
     -  Posted by Deepa on Sep 6 2004 [Event]

From the the two days at The Global Brand Forum

  • ?Most managers search for success in the wrong place. Let?s say you want to be rich;Do what they did before they became rich, not after!? Al Ries, the Guru of Branding for those wishing to study successful people.
  • ?Being number one does not mean we will be number one next year. It is a never ending battle to keep your position.? Minister Mentor, Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew on the dangers of complacency.
  • ?To be a leader, you need to have followers.? Dr. Warren Bennis
  • ?Everything that I am, I learnt from someone else.? Rudy Giuliani
  • ?Prepare relentlessly for any contingency.? Rudy Guiliani, who learnt this from his first boss, Federal Judge Lloyd McMohan. On an average, for a one hour in court, they would prepare for 4 hours.

  • ?Leadership is personal.? Dr. Kiran Bedi (This has been reiterated by a number of great leaders.)
  • ?Be brave because the things you fight for now are the same things you will be celebrated for years later.? Francis Ford Coppola
  • ?I can call spirits from the vasty deep. Why so can I, or so can any man; but will they come when you do call for them? Shakespeare, King Henry IV, Part I. Dr. Bennis quoting his favourite author, William Shakespeare on Leaders requiring followers.
  • ?If you want to know who is running the world, check who is hiring the artists.? Francis Ford Coppola

Reverse Mentoring: Getting the “Tech-generation” as mentors to your senior team!!
     -  Posted by Deepa on Sep 3 2004 [Learning]

    Consider the following statements:

  • “For the first time in history, we have youth knowing more than adults about something central to society, and that’s technology”, said Dennis Harper, who founded Generation www.Y, a national student computer training program, with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • “Recently, I was with a young researcher, albeit one that was a bit unusual, that had actually wired a web browser into his eyeglasses. As he was having a conversation with me he was actually bringing up my web page to read about me. This was a bizarre experience, but except for watching his eye movements, I was pretty much unaware that while he was talking to me he was also reading about me. I was even unaware of how he was using his left hand in his pocket to cord in keystrokes to bring up my Web page, while seamlessly talking with me. I was completely blown away that he could do these things in
parallel and relatively undetectable to me” John Seely Brown
  • “Executives are beginning to realize that knowledge isn’t a one-way street. It’s in everyone’s best interest to share expertise”, Jerry Wind, Director of the Wharton Fellows Program.
  • Today, if organizations truly want to maximise the potential of its people, they must consider Reverse
Mentoring and even take it a step further: consider a partnership of the youth and seniors. The current times are demanding a set of skills and capabilities that the 30 under generation seems to be naturally blessed with and is essential for anyone who does not wish to go the way of the dinosaurs.
